It will be useful for a little explanation on how the series is run, both for the benefit of new runners and the illumination of the old.

The races are run on an accurately measured 1.5 mile course around the lakes at Cookoos Hollow with runners given a handicap. Each runner is started on a phased basis, the slower runners first and the faster runners last. In theory, if the handicaps are correct, everyone will finish together (heaven forbid).

This makes for ultimately close racing with everyone standing a chance of winning with the addition of having a lot of fun.  In training terms it is a session of speed work for everyone with someone to pull on and aim for throughout the race.

The series is run over 5 events throughout the summer with each person's best three results to count.

There is a bottle of wine to each of the first three runners in each race, with series trophies being presented at the yearly prize giving dance.

The system for those of you with a long memory is based on the Thomas Cook lunch time handicaps of yesteryear, using a very clever computer program developed by Graham Anderson, who is now a Werrington member.  The timing is automatic, and after every event a runner's handicap is re-calculated based on several variables, which hopefully keeps each race competitive and by the end of the season can be very accurate.

This series is NOT just for the seasoned runner but is for everyone in the club.

The series has been very well received in the past and last year we had up to 40 people in each race.  As the organisation time is quite high, I hope I can count on everyone's support throughout the summer to make this the best year yet.

Lastly, please turn up earlier on race nights to allow extra time to enter and collect your number, especially for those of you who have not run the handicap races before, to allow for time to add your details to the computer program.  It would be very much appreciated and makes everything run smoothly and to time.

Phil will be issuing numbers from around 18:30 in the Werrington Centre.

Please note: Runners completing their first race do not count for prizes or series awards until their second race.
